Just because appliances are small doesn’t mean they have to be cheap. In fact, the opposite is often true—24-inch refrigerators and 18-inch dishwashers are often designed specifically for upscale urban condos, vacation cabins, or second kitchens.
We put some high-end compact fridges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers through the same tests we subject all appliances to—big or small, expensive or affordable.
Most of our top picks for apartment-size appliances come from Europe, where smaller living spaces require compact options.
These are the best appliances to outfit an upscale, compact kitchen or laundry room.
Liebherr 24-inch Refrigerator
When it comes to the kitchen, Liebherr only makes one thing: Fridges. Its 24-inch models are designed for apartments, but have the same build quality as the company’s upscale wine refrigerators and pro-style freezers.
We measured even temperatures over time in the freezer, and found the crisper drawer did a great job preserving vegetables—so there’ll always be something to eat in the fridge even if you’ve been away. Read the full review
Wolf 24-inch Cooktop and Oven
If you’re looking for a separate wall oven and cooktop, the new 24-inch series from Wolf is worth a look.
Unlike all the other products on this list, we have yet to test these. However, the oven is made by Switzerland’s V-ZUG—one of the best-regarded names in the home appliance industry—and the cooktop is simply a smaller version of other great Wolf induction models.
Like many upscale appliances, this Wolf isn't available for purchase online. Contact an authorized Wolf Sub-Zero dealer for more information.
Bosch 18-inch Dishwasher

Bosch also sells 18-inch versions of its popular third-rack dishwashers. In fact, at 44 dBA, the 800 Series is the quietest 18-inch dishwasher you can buy—which is important in a small kitchen. It also has built-in leak protection, which can be helpful in a high-rise apartment.
Blomberg 24-inch Washer and Matching Ventless Heat Pump Dryer
Blomberg is the first company to sell a compact, ventless, heat pump dryer in the U.S., but the company has a long history of building similar appliances in Europe and Asia.
We prefer heat pump dryers to traditional condenser models because they take less time and use less energy. Our testers raved about this 24-inch Blomberg—which can fit in a tiny kitchen or en suite laundry room. Best of all, it doesn't require a vent. That means you can install it anywhere there's space and a 220V outlet.
Its matching washer did a good job removing stains in our tests, but still costs a lot less than competing models from Miele and Bosch. Read the full review
